Empowering and Celebrating High-Achieving High School Students

The Society of Torch & Laurel is a community-based honors program launched in 2013 by The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) to recognize high-achieving high school students while providing expertise, insight, motivation, inspiration, and vital tools to make better decisions about creating an ideal future. The organization exists to make a difference for students and their families.

The T&L Story
I started the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in 1994 to recognize high achieving first and second year college students. Transitioning from high school to college can be very challenging. I wanted there to be an honor society that recognizes the students who successfully make this transition and then provide opportunities for scholarship, leadership and community service.

The idea of NSCS has grown to more than 300 chapters throughout the US and more than 1.5 million high achieving members. It is now a large and thriving community of members who are changing the world.

In 2013 another “crazy idea” emerged when a group of NSCS members were talking about the things they wish they would have known in high school when they started making their plans and thinking about their priorities for what do to after high school. How to pick the right college? How to pay for college? Wonder if college is even the right thing to do beyond high school? What colleges are out there that may be perfect, but they had never heard of it?

Hearing all of that and realizing that all of our NSCS members were also high achievers in high school, I decided to launch the Society of Torch & Laurel.

I started this program for you. I want Torch & Laurel to be one more resource for you, the high achiever, to help you navigate the process of thinking about your future. I hope you will choose to join our community and I especially hope to be a part of your journey as you think about the life and the future that you want to create.

The Torch

The Torch represents the ability for each of us to serve as a guiding light for others and for the ability of education to serve as a beacon of light, eradicating ignorance. May our scholars always remember that lighting the way for others, brightens the path for themselves.

The Laurel

The Laurel serves to remind our scholars that they are part of a long and noble tradition of distinguished scholars. May our scholars uphold their place in history by living up to the honor bestowed upon them.

The Double Circles

The Double Circles represent the circles of support and influence that surround us, including family and friends, teachers and advocates. May our scholars recognize, value and appreciate their supporters and seek to serve in that capacity for others
